The Center has a wide juridical independence, as much as a Department of an Italian University for both research and teaching. Its administrative headquarters are located in L’Aquila and its scientific center is in Cisterna di Latina. The Center has the following institutional objectives: (I) promote, conduct and coordinate research activities, with particular attention to the development and entrenchment of scientific culture in the province of Latina; (II) promote initiatives for scientific links between researchers in mathematical fields and researchers in solid mechanics and fluids, operating both in Italy and abroad in the field of mathematical modeling for engineering; (III) promote, support and organize highly qualified educational activities, such as training, masters and doctorate courses; (IV) encourage the promotion of mathematics and mechanics of complex systems through publications, conferences, seminars and exhibitions; (V) carry out consultancy and research for organizations and institutions; (VI) disseminate knowledge of research undertaken by the Center in the most appropriate ways.
The Center has been founded to be a forum where Mathematics and Numerical Analysis are developed as a tool for describing the behavior of Complex Systems. The topics of interest of the Center are related to mathematical modeling, numerical implementation and testing of physical problems of mechanics of complex systems.
The research topics already active in the Center include: Variational and optimization methods, Gamma convergence, homogenization techniques, mechanics of fluids and solids, vibration control by means of piezoelectric actuators, composite materials and their numerical modelling, detection of land mines, biomechanics of growing tissues, fluid dynamics and transport phenomena, vibration and waves in continuous and multi-phase media, plasticity and damage mechanics, stability and control of structures, dynamics of non-linear systems, fluid dynamics models for the analysis of traffic flows and the social sciences, numerical-differential modeling in the mechanics and the electromagnetism of biological materials and nano-structures…
The following Institutions are associated with the M&MOCS: Dipartimento di Matematica e Applicazioni “Renato Caccioppoli”, Università degli Studi di Napoli “Federico II”, LaMS Modelling & Simulation Lab Dipartimento di Strutture Università degli Studi Roma Tre, Dipartimento di Meccanica ed Aeronautica Università di Roma La Sapienza, Institut de Mathématiques de Toulon et du Var, The Computational Science and Engineering Graduate Group and Designated Emphasis (DE-CSE) University of California at Berkeley (UC Berkeley).
The activities of the laboratories belonging to M&MoCS are detailed in Appendix 2.
