    Brief Description

Common engineering materials reach in many demanding applications such as automotive or aerospace their limits and new developments are required to fulfil increasing demands on performance and characteristics. The properties of materials can be increased for example by combining different materials to achieve better properties than a single constituent or by shaping the material or constituents in a specific structure. Many of these new materials reveal a much more complex behaviour than traditional engineering materials due to their advanced structure or composition. In many fields of application, the development of new advanced materials must be accomplished by accurate and reliable modelling and simulation techniques. Thus, this symposium focuses on the continuum mechanical modelling of materials and finite element techniques to numerically solve the governing constitutive equations. Based on a thorough introduction into the continuum mechanics and finite element method, advanced materials taken from the area of aerospace, automotive and other industries will be covered.

The Summer School is aimed at postgraduate students, postdocs and researchers in applied mechanics, materials science and applied mathematics.

    Lecturers

    Holm Altenbach

Full Professor (Engineering Mechanics) in the Institute of Mechanics (Faculty of Mechanical Engineering) at the Otto-von-Guericke-University Magdeburg, Germany. His main research areas are continuum mechanics and structural analysis including modelling of material behaviour in the elastic and beyond the elastic range.
