The Fédération Francilienne de Mécanique
The Fédération Francilienne de Mécanique Matériaux Structures et Procédés, in short F2M, CNRS FR 2609, gathers twenty public research teams in Ile-de-France region, representing a potential of about 300 researchers and engineers, and even doctoral students. The F2M was created in 2004 and renewed twice in 2010 and 2014 after evaluation by the CNRS National Committee and AERES. Arts et Métiers ParisTech is the institution hosting the F2M and strongly supports its actions.
The Federation F2M thus contributes to strengthen the role of mechanics in science, industry and society. It was created by CNRS within the existing labs, and was acknowledged also by the ministry for education.Its objectives are the following:
- to develop and enforce new methods and scientific approaches to better master the links between processing, materials and structures. This requires a common endeavour of specialized teams of different labs to elaborate multi-scale approaches that connect the different mechanisms at work at different scales from atoms to structural components;
- to create a pool of powerful experimental and numerical platforms that are shared by the region’s researchers and open to external initiatives;
- to build up a consistent research framework in mechanics in the Paris region; to improve and rationalize the research and high-level education provision based on a synergy of research teams and mother institutions (universities, engineering schools, CNRS).
The main research topics of F2M are: Material Processing for structures, Multiscale approaches, Probabilistic approaches in mechanics, Dynamics of materials and structures, Damage and fracture, Mechanics of heterogeneous materials, Identification and validation methods including field measurement techniques.
The F2M organizes each year since 2008 in June the Rencontres Franciliennes de Mécanique dedicated to a specific research topic for which cooperation between the labs is targeted.
Arts et Métiers ParisTech and the F2M labs support each year since 2009 the F2M exploratory cooperative research projects Coup de pouce F2M involving at least two F2M labs and dedicated to innovative fundamental research on theoretical, experimental and numerical topics. They are selected by a committee made of the representatives of the F2M scientific topics.
The Appendix 1 gives the complete list of the laboratories belonging to the F2M and the corresponding Institutions.The detailed description of experimental platforms, research projects and general activities of F2M can be found on the web site www.f2m.cnrs-bellevue.fr.
